2012 Tokara Director's Reserve

While the classic red Bordeaux blend has been exported to the four corners of the world, its sibling, the Bordeaux Blanc combo of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon rarely get its due. The union of Sauvignon Blanc’s tropical, herbaceous, and mineral notes with the texturally rich, honeyed, and floral Sémillon is a thrilling combination when done right and in South Africa, Tokara’s Director’s Reserve White is about as right as you can get. Tokara’s flagship white wines are consistently top ranked in South Africa by Decanter as well as numerous local distinctions.
South Africa’s wine industry has modernized at a fantastic pace since the country opened up in the 90’s, which brought in a deluge of international influences and consultants. Tokara has emerged as a reliable, premium leader in South Africa’s wine renaissance and the critics have taken notice. The Wine Advocate’s Neil Martin called South Africa “the most exciting New World country on the scene” and he has tons of praise for Tokara winemaker Miles Mossop declaring them, “one of Stellenbosch’s most reliable producers, consistently producing some of the region’s finest wines.” Decanter even declared the estate a South African First Growth!
We popped a bottle recently and found the Director’s Reserve White as good a value for top quality white wine as you can get; what’s more, it is from one of the most exciting, and distinctive ‘new world’ regions! This unique white Bordeaux style blend is sure to get you excited about South Africa! Cheers!
