"The quality of the wines and reputation of Vega Sicilia is indisputable" - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
From one of the greatest estates in all of Spain, the 2012 Valbuena is proof positive that Vega Sicilia has always led the pack in Rioja. Aged for a full 5 years before release, this 100% Tempranillo is a beautiful introduction to the what the iconic winery does best. Over the past 150 years, Vega Sicilia has produced vintage after vintage of profound and long-lived wines, and is considered a “benchmark for the world’s great red wines” (WA).
Coming from the domain's young vines, the Valbuena is aged for slightly less time than the Unico, but really the most noticeable difference is the price tag, as the Unico will easily set you back $300+. While usually a blend of Tempranillo and a small percentage of Merlot, the hot, dry summer was tough on the estate’s Merlot vines, and Vega Sicilia went with 100% Tempranillo. The result is “pure, full-bodied and quite elegant” (John Gilman) and both “precise and elegant” (Wine Advocate).
Vega Sicilia ferments each plot of vines separately giving a nearly unheard of level of attention to each component that they use. The result is an incredibly well-defined wine that exemplifies their unique style. In the fashion of many other Spanish producers, they age their wines for much longer than typical. Despite its exuberant but polished profile, it is built to last 20 years, though the warmth makes it exceedingly tasty today. With unanimous critical praise year after year, you won’t want to pass this up. Cheers!
