2012 Vignerons de Tautavel Cotes du Roussillon Villages 'Silex'
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $28.94 (reg. $44.94)
"Reminding me of Clos des Papes’s 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape in a blind tasting...This is high class all the way and a gorgeous wine."
- 95 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Fans of Chateauneuf du Pape will find a lot to love in Roussillon, "a mecca of high quality wines" according to the Wine Advocate, and the 2012 'Silex' is case in point - a dead-ringer for a well-crafted CdP without the high-end price tag!
Over-politicized AOC regulations and a historical reputation for lower tier wines have made quality hard to parse out here, but it can be had for a song once you find the right producer. Vignerons de Tautavel (also referred to as VTV) is definitely one of the 'right' ones, praised by the Wine Advocate as "one of the top co-ops out there...and the quality of fruit always shines in these wines."
Located in the northern part of the Roussillon, marked by steep slopes and searingly dry summers, VTV has a knack for turning out rich, full-bodied reds that share many traits with higher priced offerings from the Rhone and Priorat. Their 2012 'Silex', a blend of old vine Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, "offers rocking notes of kirsch liqueur, spice, garrigue and cedar to go with a medium to full-bodied, elegant and seamless feel on the palate," per the Wine Advocate and we confirmed their assessment when we opened a bottle earlier this month. It's safe to say that we were thoroughly impressed!
Drinking way above what its humble region and price may indicate, you'll want to load up by the case on this sub-$30 gem. Cheers!
