2013 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $44.94 (was: $54.94)
One of our favorite sources for reliable and delicious Brunello - thanks to their excellent pricing and traditional, food-friendly style - Altesino can always be counted on to produce real-deal Sangiovese.
Proprietor Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini is a true Tuscan and outbid Chateau Margaux to buy the property back in 2002 to help keep the region more Italian. Since then, quality has been on a pretty steep upward trend. The 2013 is clearly one of their best, earning resounding critical acclaim.
Montalcino has seen a run of pretty wonderful vintages: you have the legendary '10s, the easy drinking '11s, and the ripe '12s. Those who love their Brunello to be both balanced and Burgundian in style will have an absolute field day with the 2013s.
A cooler, more classically styled vintage than 2012, yet far more accessible than 2010, the '13s have a “freshness and gracefulness” that will make them endlessly intriguing. This is a terrific vintage for Altesino, and its sub-$50 price makes it a must-have!
Classic pairings like charcuterie, ragu, or fennel sausage will soar with a glass of Altesino, so pick up plenty to have on hand for enjoyment now and over next 10-15 years. Cheers!
