2013 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico ‘San Lorenzo’
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $42.94 (reg. $46.94)
Since 1982 Castello di Ama has been an integral part of Chianti’s rise as a quality wine-producing region, and their San Lorenzo vineyard produces one of their top expressions of Chianti. "A reference-point producer in Tuscany," per Antonio Galloni, "these are some the most pedigreed wines being made anywhere," and their San Lorenzo is a benchmark that now comes with a guarantee of quality through the Gran Selezione designation!
Castello di Ama was a major supporter of the new Gran Selezione tier in Chianti, which requires further aging compared to riserva, 100% estate grown fruit and more importantly, pass a rigorous tasting panel. Despite some controversy surrounding the change (as any upset to tradition might), the GS commission rejected well over half the wines submitted for the status in the first year, and quality is demonstrably higher. Castello di Ama’s ‘San Lorenzo’ was awarded the Gran Selezione status, and in it the first year as a GS wine made it into Wine Spectator’s Top 10! Castello di Ama had been making San Lorenzo for years before however, and their track record for quality is unimpeachable.
2013 was an excellent vintage with Galloni describing the wines from Chianti as “excellent to sublime” and as for Castello di Ama, those “who can find the 2013s should not hesitate, they are sublime.” We've locked in a parcel of this 95-point stunner and it's one that all Tuscan enthusiasts will be thrilled to follow over the next 10+ years. Cheers!
