"Readers looking for uncompromising Chateauneuf du Pape that can age for two decades need look no further than Pegau." - Robert Parker
Domaine du Pegau is well known for their unapologetically rustic, and traditionally made wines, which have earned them legions of admirers around the world who eagerly await the characterful bottles every year. Using only whole clusters, and aging in old foudres and demi-muids, owner Laurence Féraud puts out Châteauneuf du Pape with a bit of a wild streak that makes them a beautifully distinctive wine in every vintage. Robert Parker has declared that Pegau’s are “some of my favorite wines in the world” and Jeb Dunnuck has never been short on praise too, advising “it’s almost impossible to have too much Pégaü in the cellar!”
Domaine du Pegau’s top bottling runs in the $400+ range, which is why we are so excited to be able to bring you their 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape ‘Cuvee Reservee’ for under $50, a pretty stunning deal for “one of the benchmarks for traditionally-made Chateauneuf du Pape” (Parker).
2013 proved the rule that you should always follow the producer, not the vintage. The late ripening season and overall conditions gave the edge to traditionally minded producers who aren’t just trying to nail the same lush, over-ripe style in every vintage. Nevertheless, this 2013 Pegau Cuvee Reservee is rich but also balanced and energetic, and should offer delightful enjoyment at every stage of development over the next 10+ years!
Die-hard Rhone enthusiasts will be thrilled to add this incredible cuvee to their cellar. Cheers!
