2013 Domaine Jean Grivot Bourgogne Blanc

We are very excited to have secured an allocation of this rare and delicious Chardonnay from one of Burgundy’s top domaines! It takes a lot of guts to work outside Burgundy’s rigid regulations, but that’s exactly what Etienne Grivot did when he planted Chardonnay in Vosne-Romanee back in 1991. Fortunately, if anyone can get away with it, it’s Grivot, who heads up what Clive Coates called “one of the great domaines of Burgundy.” Grivot did the unthinkable by producing Chardonnay in Pinot Noir territory, but far from tasting like a curiosity, it's a sublime effort that will go toe-to-toe with the wines of Puligny, Chassagne and Meursault.
Making only 150 cases of this delightful passion project, Grivot’s Bourgogne Blanc (no AOC rules for Vosne-Romanee Blanc!) is a characterful, balanced Chardonnay, with yellow orchard and citrus fruits, toasted almonds, and fresh linear acidity that's in an absolutely wonderful spot five years on from the vintage.
Today the the communes of Burgundy are more and more likely to be planted with a preponderance of either Pinot or Chardonnay; after all it would be hard to make much money selling red Meursault or white Chambertin, when they are so famous for the opposite. Etienne Grivot realized however that this little slice of Vosne-Romanee wasn’t quite the right exposition for great Pinot Noir and so he turned it into a bit of a side project, and we love the results.
With the beautiful mineral driven character of the Cote de Nuits, Grivot’s Bourgogne Blanc is a delicious white Burgundy that will reward medium term cellaring. It will be gone fast so grab some today! Cheers!
