"There is no doubting the quality of Jean Grivot’s 2013s."
- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Domaine Grivot is one of the great leading lights of Burgundy and their village Vosne-Romanee is a clear example of how great terroir succeeds at all levels. While the premier crus by Grivot are $100+, and the grand crus many times more, this village Vosne-Romanee is a terrific opportunity to experience an elegant, fresh expression of the legendary commune, and it’s the perfect red Burgundy to enjoy today.
Since the ‘90s Etienne Grivot has run Domaine Grivot, and is the fifth generation to do so in Vosne-Romanee. By ‘94, Etienne had found his stride, and today his is “one of the great domaines of Burgundy” according to Clive Coates, who has given the estate his highest 3-star ranking. Etienne Grivot practices natural viticulture across his enviable assortment of holdings in the Cote de Nuits, practicing a subtle hand when using oak, preferring to use several types of tonneaux so as not to impart a clear signature of the wood.
Grivot’s efforts to reduce yields and focus on the vineyard have created astronomical demand for his wines from Richebourg, Suchot, and Echezeaux; fortunately this village Vosne-Romanee sees every bit of the same attention to detail as his 1er and grand crus.
The 2013s from Grivot are tremendously classy, and the early-drinking vintage is ideal for high quality village wines like this, which are both approachable and characterful, with terroir is superbly transparent. This is classically refined Vosne Romanee that will drink gorgeously today and for another 7-10 years easily. Cheers!
