2013 Domaine Tortochot Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $89.94 (reg. $119.94)
2013 is proving to be an incredible source of smart values in Burgundy. The vintage avoided the hype-machine due to cooler, more difficult conditions, but as always in Burgundy, great vineyards and winemakers make great wine. Today’s Charmes-Chambertin from Domaine Tortochot is a seriously legit grand cru for under $100, which is not only the lowest price of any vintage of this grand cru bottling from Tortochot, but for any 2013 Charmes-Chambertin currently on the market. Described as a vintage “for long-time connoisseurs”, the 2013 Tortochot is an absolute must by for those who appreciate the classic, old-school style of Burgundy.
Tortochot may have been around since 1865, but they are qualitatively a real up and comer. A name “to keep an eye on” per Neal Martin, this domaine’s old-school style Burgundy is refreshing, and under current proprietor Chantal Tortochot-Michel and “superstar” (Wine Advocate) winemaker Sylvain Pataille, these wines have never been better. One source of Domaine Tortochot’s success in the cooler 2013 vintage was that it was their first year certified organic. Combined with their exceptional 40+ year old vines in this grand cru, this bottle really shines.
As the word gets out about Tortochot, the ridiculous pricing on their grand crus just won’t last, so grab a case for your cellar as this Charmes-Chambertin will go the long haul. Cheers!
