2013 Domaine Tortochot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $94.94 (was: $144.94)
Gevrey stalwart Domaine Tortochot has long made respectable old-school red Burgundy. But in recent vintages, it’s become more and more clear that ‘respectable’ just doesn't do justice to the ever-increasing quality of Chantal Tortochot’s best wines.
2013 was the very first year the domaine was certified organic, and the quality really shows in this old-vine grand cru Clos Vougeot, which we’re offering today at over 30% off our regular price. This “lovely example” of Vougeot (per noted critic John Gilman) has a typically kaleidoscopic bouquet of “red plums, black cherries, cocoa, a lovely base of soil, gamebirds, woodsmoke and cedar” that can only be achieved by over 70-year-old vines and traditional winemaking.
2013 has proven to be a dream vintage for Burgundy geeks and “long-time connoisseurs” according to Vinous thanks to cooler weather and low yields. Terroir really shines through in a vintage like this, and, with snappy acidity and elegant aromas, the top 2013s are perfect dinner-table Burgundies that can be enjoyed young or cellared with equal success.
Tortochot’s Clos Vougeot is just now entering what we think is a nice long drinking window though it still has some wonderful development ahead with decades of enjoyment in store. But with a wonderful meal and a decant, one shouldn’t feel guilty about giving it a try today. Cheers!
