2013 Domaine Tortochot Gevrey Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques 1er Cru
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $49.94 (reg. $74.94)
With prices for great 1er cru Burgundy seemingly continually on the rise, we find ourselves turning to Domaine Tortochot more and more often, as it is one of the few addresses that is both reasonable in their pricing and artisanal in their approach. Today’s 2013 Lavaux St Jacques is a “lively and beguiling” 1er cru (Jancis Robinson), with a decade plus of enjoyment ahead and a sub-$50 price tag, which you won’t find anywhere else but here!
Tortochot has a 150-year history in Burgundy, but people have only just started to take notice over the past fifteen or so as quality has been on the up and up. A name “to keep an eye on” (Wine Advocate), this domaine has been praised by both Neal Martin and Clive Coates for making tremendous strides over the past decade, and under current proprietor Chantal Tortochot-Michel and “superstar” (Wine Advocate) winemaker Sylvain Pataille, these wines have never been better. The cooler 2013 vintage tested the winemaking team, but thanks to recently getting certified as organic, as well as Lavaux St Jacques’ full southern exposure, the results are fantastic.
The cooler weather meant lower yields, so while the 2013s are delicious there’s just not much of it. You’ll absolutely want to stock up asap as pricing like this doesn’t come around often. Cheers!
