2013 Dumol Chardonnay Isobel
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $64.94 (reg. $74.94)
This “absolutely sensational” (Parker) Sonoma Coast Chardonnay from DuMOL is everything we’ve come to expect from virtuoso winemaker Andy Smith and his team. Like top shelf white Burgundy (Corton-Charlemagne anyone?), great Sonoma Coast Chardonnay really blossoms with some time in the bottle to show the full breadth of expression that this terroir brings to the table. At five years on, the 2013 ‘Isobel’ Chardonnay is hitting that sweet spot and and is a must for the enthusiast that appreciates the best that California can offer.
Over the course of several gorgeous vintages, the folks at DuMOL have moved up their harvest dates to capture greater freshness in these warmer years. Starting with 2013, Andy Smith was entirely focused on DuMOL and as a result their Pinot and Chardonnay continue to rise in reputation as representative of that quintessential California style. Declared “one of the superstar wineries” in California by Robert Parker, and crafting wines that “have never been better” (Galloni), DuMOL has become our go-to for great single-vineyard Chardonnay.
With all their efforts though, the real star of the ‘Isobel’ Chardonnay, is the Charles Heintz Vineyard. One ridge in from the Pacific Ocean, and at 900ft elevation, the Heintz family has farmed this site for a full century. The block for the ‘Isobel’ was planted 32 years ago and is renowned for producing wines of exceptionally texture and finesse. For a classic California Chardonnay with the richness (but not the price tag) of top-flight white Burgundy, the Isobel is your wine!
