Geantet-Pansiot is one of those old-school Burgundy domaines that has long had a loyal following in France and the UK. Such a loyal following in fact that little ever bothered to make it over to the US. Fortunately as demand for great - and still-affordable - Burgundy has never been higher, we have been able to secure some of their superb ‘Le Poissenot’ 1er cru for the lowest price in the U.S.
A true multi-generation family operation, Geantet-Pansiot’s unpretentious reds are normally "very reliable and good value” per the Wine Advocate, but today’s price is far below the ‘normal’ tariff, and for quality 1er cru Gevrey Chambertin, it’s more like a steal!
‘Le Poissenot’ 1er cru is a classic Pinot cru, with south-facing exposure and poor soils resulting in superb structure and richness. The warmer microclimate meant that in a vintage described by Vinous as “cool” and “endlessly intriguing”, Poissenot has an added layer of depth and weight that keeps it from being too lean and mean. Pale in color, and immensely fragrant, it has a “lovely sense of underlying tension on the balanced but notably firm finale” (92pts Burghound).
Started back in 1954, today Domaine Geantet-Pansiot takes a pragmatic approach to farming, practicing lutte raisonée, a method that eschews any chemicals in the vineyards. Enjoy this elegant and classic Gevrey Chambertin ‘Le Poiossenot’ over the next 10-15 years. Cheers!
