by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $69.94 (reg. $79.94)
Few in Burgundy can match the extraordinary diversity of Louis Jadot’s portfolio, and while the world might know them best for value priced Bourgogne, their 1er and grand cru offerings represent excellent entry points for Burgundy enthusiasts. Particularly this rare Volnay monopole ‘Clos de la Barre.’ An exclusive of Jadot, Clos de la Barre is a highly distinctive 1er
cru that offers a uniquely delicate expression of Volnay that will delight the most discerning Burgundy enthusiasts.
What more can be said about Maison Louis Jadot? One of best large-scale operations in Burgundy, their omnipresent entry level wines often distract from the superior single vineyard wines, which are tremendous values and wonderfully expressive of their terroir. The soil of Clos de la Barre have somewhat less of the chalk Volnay is known for with an added layer of iron-rich topsoil. The result is an intensely mineral, savory Volnay balanced by red strawberry fruits within a delicate frame. 2013 is a characterful vintage that’s “ripe with rewards and is endlessly intriguing" (Tanzer), which describes Clos de la Barre to a T.
With silky tannin on the finish, this will age well over the next decade but should be approachable today. Jadot is the only producer of this 1er cru, which is so small that it only produced 520 cases in 2013, so act quickly before this limited parcel is snatched up.
