Finding an entry-level wine from any famous Barolo producer—much less one of its icons—is a bold task and sometimes fruitless endeavor. But here we have done the work for you! And this Dolcetto is delicious!
Today we are offering a 90-point Dolcetto from one of Piedmont’s “leading lights,” Luciano Sandrone, for an outstanding price!
“Luciano Sandrone's entry-level wines show all the class and elegance that are the hallmarks of this producer's house style," per Galloni. Since most of us don’t get the opportunity to open a perfectly-aged Barolo from an acclaimed Barolista every night, the next best thing - and one that won’t leave you feeling under-enthused like many under $20 wines can - is a Dolcetto d’Alba. Usually grown on neighboring slopes to its high performing Barolo sibling, these Dolcettos express dark red and black cherry fruit, aromatic herbs, and baking spice, interwoven with a supple texture, much in the same way as Nebbiolo. Dolcetto is really the only everyday wine that can satiate your Piedmont craving - and for a minor fraction of the cost!
‘‘It’s the perfect wine to sip when you’re tired, at the end of a long day,’" says Ian D’Agata of Piedmont’s Dolcetto. ‘It’s perfumed, graceful, fruity and friendly—a great everyday table wine which goes with everything: pizza, pasta, barbecued meat.”
Moreover, the 2013 vintage was classic for Dolcetto. It was “a cool, late-ripening year that yielded vibrant, perfumed wines built on energy. Unfortunately, 2014 turned out to be very challenging for Dolcetto, which ripens first among Piedmont top three red grapes, so Dolcetto fans will want to stock away at least a few bottles of the 2013s.” (AG)
