One of Abruzzo’s most renowned producers, Masciarelli has single-handedly changed the way we think about Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, and their flagship ‘Villa Gemma Riserva’ is a powerhouse 95pt red that you need to have on your radar. The classic red of Abruzzo has long suffered an unfair reputation as a simple, quaffable wine, but a handful of top quality producers in the region are consistently proving that it can be as serious as any from Tuscany. Masciarelli is generally regarded as one of the best known names in Abruzzo and their flagship Villa Gemma Riserva’ holds the record of 14 consecutive Tre Bicchieri awards!

The 2013 ‘Villa Gemma Riserva’ is a bold and structured Montepucliano demonstrating this variety’s often ignored potential for longevity. With a dark, smoky profile from the extra time in barrel, this nevertheless retains “a real sense of precision and balance” (Wine Advocate) and will stand up to a chargrilled Ribeye like a champ.

Nestled along the Adriatic Coast, Abruzzo is a “sleeping giant of Italian wine” (Vinous) and home to some of the most collectible cult wines in Italy outside of Tuscany. With names like Valentini and Emidio Pepe costing well north of a hundred dollars, the ‘Villa Gemma Riserva’ is a serious value for such a well built Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Salute!

95 points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate: "...The Masciarelli 2013 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva Villa Gemma is a gorgeous wine with a real sense of precision and balance...You get dark fruit and plum, with tar, smoke and spice. There is a lot to admire here between the bounty of the mouthfeel and the aromas, resulting in a Montepulciano worthy of a grilled steak..."

94 points, James Suckling: "The fruit here is really beautiful with dried violets, crushed lavender, oyster shell and iodine. To be sure, there’s lots of vanilla and resin, as well as tar and ash, but the fresh aromas do balance everything out. What’s more, while the palate’s big and bold with very chewy tannins, there’s a streak of fresh acidity that keeps this fine and elegant..."
