2013 Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $119.94 (reg. $129.94)
The 2013 Mt Veeder Cabernet from Napa icon Mayacamas is a phenomenal bottle from what Robert Parker called “one of the most epic and awesome vintages the North Coast of California.” Grabbing 97-point scores from both Galloni and Suckling, former Screaming Eagle/Harlan winemaker Andy Erickson has nailed the ultra-classic mountain Cab style that Mayacamas became famous for in the 1970s, and it is destined to develop beautifully over the next two decades!
One of California’s oldest artisanal wineries (1889), it was in the 1970s that Mayacamas, along with Ridge, Heitz, and others helped catapult California’s global reputation for Cabernet. After years of newer cult Cabs overtaking them in attention (and price!) Mayacamas stands today as one of the great representatives of California’s classic style, while still being one of the “most fairly priced Cabernets in the market” (Galloni). Although Erickson headed up Screaming Eagle, Galloni has praised him for “keeping the house style intact” and for the 2013 he writes that it “reminds me of some of the great wines of the 1970s.”
This is a powerful and tightly-coiled mountain Cabernet from one of Napa’s finest vintage in memory. Fans should go deep on this tremendous wine while quantities last. Cheers!
