2013 Mindego Ridge Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $34.94 (reg. $44.94)
Despite harboring one of California’s most lauded vineyards (Ridge’s Monte Bello) the Santa Cruz Mountains remains criminally underrated as a wine region. The rugged mountains are tougher to farm and the difficult climate yields a smaller crop, but while these elements are a challenge for the winemaker, they make for superlative wine.
Mindego Ridge has been proving this point for only a few years, but people are starting to take notice. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate says their wines are “well worth the extra effort to track down!" Easier said than done considering production levels (less than 300 cases were made of this 2013 Chardonnay), but we've got you covered, and you won't find this "super-intriguing" wine for less than $40 anywhere else!
This Santa Cruz Chardonnay from their debut vintage nabbed 93pts from Vinous, with Galloni praising its “crystalline purity that is such a signature of the appellation.” And this will run about a third of the cost of nearby Rhys’ Alpine Vineyards Chardonnay (which got the exact same score from Galloni!).
Mindego Ridge is a relatively tiny, family run operation, with a minuscule production, but Galloni has noted that owners Stacey and David Gollnick “have made quite an impression in a very short time.” For only $34.94, you can get in on some of the most rarefied, and premium terroir in California from a family run winery that is highly sought out by those in the know. Grab some while you can, and enjoy this Santa Cruz beauty today. Cheers!
