2013 Piancornello Brunello di Montalcino
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $49.94 (was: $59.94)
Piancornello has come out with one of the “Brunellos of the vintage”, delivering a wine that exemplifies the perfect balance between structure and deliciousness that's present in the best 2013s. This "extremely refined" 96-point gem with please the most discerning Brunello enthusiasts and deftly does so in a sub-$50 package that will challenge the big names of the region.
Piancornello isn’t the most well known winery on the block, but they ought to be. Their small, organic estate is in the southerly Sesta region of Montalcino, where the Sangiovese takes on a broad and large scale of richness in most vintages, but in a cooler, classic year such as 2013, the Sangiovese from this region can be impeccably balanced, too.
Per Vinous, the 2013 Piancornello will need a decade of patience (it is Brunello after all), but the terrific purity of fruit and “floral and spicy lift” will make this pretty stunning with only another year or two in the bottle. One of Galloni’s “favorite under-the-radar estates” in Montalcino, Piancornello is a superb starting point for the excellent 2013 vintage. Cheers!
