2013 Prager Riesling Smaragd Achleiten
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $42.94 (reg. $64.94)
Vinous wrote of Prager’s wines, that they are “among the most complex, intriguing and subtle of any of the world’s Rieslings.” This is a world-class white wine at a price that can't be beat - over 40% off the national average and the lowest price of any vintage on the market. 2013 was the best vintage in a decade for Austria, so you will want to stock up as this bottle will pay dividends for many, many years!
For fans of exceptional, age-worthy white wine, your choices might normally be limited to a few select regions. While Burgundy and Alsace may fit the bill, that bill usually ends up being too high! Austria however, is a phenomenal source for world-class dry Riesling for the everyday collector, and quality, in this case, is off the charts. Prager is one of Austria’s top producers, founded by local legend, Franz Prager. Today his grandson Toni Bodenstein, part biologist, geologist, and historian, is a true terroir-whisperer of sorts and creates site-specific Riesling that collectors around the world seek out.
The 2013 Smargd Achleiten is sourced from the Achleiten vineyard’s best and ripest grapes. In the Wachau, smargd (an emerald lizard of local legend) indicates grapes of the highest level of ripeness and concentration, vinified into a dry wine that is the most sought after in Austria. Smargd Riesling is legendary for its exceptional concentration and ability to age and this 2013 Achleiten from Prager is no exception.
This is a phenomenal dry white from a vintage that produced "rivetingly dynamic" wines, and even in off years you would be hard-pressed to find this for under $50. As the Wine Advocate suggests, "If you are interested in great Rieslings...from Austria, 2013 is the vintage you should buy" and what better place to start than here! Cheers!
