"This beautiful estate, which sits on the top of Spring Mountain straddling both the Napa and Sonoma County lines, continues to turn out a super-impressive lineup of wines." - Robert Parker
High atop Spring Mountain, straddling Sonoma and Napa Counties, Pride Mountain puts out some seriously elegant mountain wines, and today’s 2013 estate Merlot captures that high-altitude terroir with an explosively flavored personality. This “brilliant estate” and its “impressive 83-acre vineyard” (Parker) was included as one of only 22 California wineries in Robert Parker’s Greatest Wine Estates and and they are routinely responsible for some seriously collectible Cabs and Merlots. While their 100-point Reserve bottlings go for hundreds of dollars, their exceptionally well-priced estate offerings are equally delicious, and remarkably accessible today!
The distinctive terroir high up on the Napa-Sonoma border allows Pride Mountain to do “so many things well” (Galloni), from Cab and Merlot, to Syrah and Chardonnay. Their Bordeaux varieties in particular are positively delicious. The 2013 Merlot has a complex and hedonistic personality that could easily be confused with a luxury offering at three times the price.
Robert Parker has remarked that 2013 was a “game-changer” and potentially the “most epic and awesome vintages the North Coast of California has ever produced.” So far that prediction is coming true and quality is consistently high. Though Pride Mountain’s 2013 Merlot shows all the promise and structure of that phenomenal vintage, it drinks “surprisingly well for the year” (Galloni) showing a bit of that plush, accessible richness great Merlot is known for. Enjoy this tasty mountain Merlot over the next several years!
