"They show their origin beautifully and have distinctive, unique personalities. In addition, they age beautifully and continue to be offered at fantastic prices. In short, don’t miss these wines." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate on Tensley wines
The 2013 vintage in Santa Barbara was about the most ideal sort of season a vintner could hope for, especially when that vintner is an experienced Rhone Ranger making world-class Grenache, like Joey Tensley. Bursting on the scene in 1998, the Wine Advocate has hailed him as “one of the rising superstars in California” and he has been lauded as a pioneer of the Rhone movement in California. The praise has been backed up by placings on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 lists, over a decades worth of 95+ point scores from the critics and a strong following from consumers for wines that “offer sensational value.”
The 2013 Tensley Grenache upholds the reputation of Joey Tensley’s Syrah, and it’s clear from the outset that this is a serious bottle of wine. Sourced from Colson Canyon Vineyard, it possesses unbelievable integration of power, grace and character thanks to the rugged, rocky soil and high elevation.
Though the Tensley Syrah’s grab much of the headlines, his 2013 Grenache is a revelation. With 30% whole cluster adding considerable weight and ageability, this is a wine that harmoniously melds pure, juicy red fruit with spicy and savory elements. The only downside is that with a minuscule amount produced (a mere 225 cases), it’s not often found on the market, much less at a price under $25.
The 2013 vintage is a year that demands attention, particularly in Santa Barbara, where the weather was warm and even throughout the season. So, if you’re a fan of the power, depth, and energy that has made California Rhone wines so popular, you owe it to yourself to give this a try. But don’t wait too long – with little available and the absolute best price around, it won't last! Cheers!
