"The artisan tradition of Montalcino is alive and well in this small, no-frills winery, while the wines have never been better." - Antonio Galloni
In the sunny southern hills of Montalcino, Uccelliera is emerging as one of the most reliably top-notch modern producers of Brunello and the embodiment of the rich and explosive style of Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The southern reaches of Montalcino can get a bad rap for an overdone expression of Brunello, but Castelnuovo dell'Abate, with its complex soils and higher elevation, is the exception and is home to legendary residents like Poggio di Sotto and Ciacci. Since 1986 Uccelliera has put out rockstar Sangiovese of depth, power, and breed that is really kicked into overdrive in cooler more classical vintages like 2013. With triple 94-point scores, there is “never enough praise” for this “fine and elegant wine” (WA) that should be in every Brunello fan's collection.
“Highly representative of these sites of the southern edge," per Galloni, proprietor Andrea Cortonesi’s “bold and exciting” wines embody the “finest of the artisan tradition in Montalcino.” The Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner has declared Uccelliera a real “grand cru” of Montalcino, and “one of my favorite Brunello producers.” 2013 is a vintage to go crazy for, as these wines will have much of the longevity of the great 2010s, with an added level of elegance and approachability in their structure. Uccelliera’s Brunello is an energetic and lively Sangiovese with critical acclaim across the board. Stock up on this one and enjoy over the next 20 years! Cheers!
