2013 Virna Borgogno Barolo
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $34.94 (reg. $46.94)
2013 has been such a banner year for Barolo, yet we still do a double take when a 95-point Barolo shows up for under forty bucks. Thanks to Virna Borgogno, this latest generation of Piemonte’s oldest winemaking family is earning a serious reputation for superb Baroli from top crus at crazy values.
Virna inherited the Lodovico Borgogno estate from her father and since 2001 has produced characterful Nebbiolo. This classic Barolo DOCG is sourced from Novello and Monforte and sees only large neutral oak during the long aging process. Thanks to a cool growing season and long harvest the 2013s are measuring up to be as explosive and age-worthy as the 2010s with “outstanding exuberance of fruit with noble tannins” (Wine Advocate). A few years down the line and the vintage’s reputation hasn’t waned; Galloni recently wrote the “2013 Barolos continue to impress for their grace and finesse.” Virna Borgogno’s 2013 Barolo captures the vintage perfectly with bright and fresh red fruit, earthy minerality, and perfectly zippy acidity that promises over a decade of enjoyment.
With such “crazy quality for a straight up Barolo” per Suckling, and the outrageous caliber of the 2013s, you won’t want to miss this Barolo, especially at this phenomenal price. Cheers!
