2013 Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $44.94 (reg. $49.94)
Potentially one of the most complex and magnificent Pinot Gris on the market, Zind Humbrecht’s ‘Heimbourg’ is a master-class in Alsatian wine. The dry whites of Alsace are among the most sought after in the world, and it’s arguably only on these low yielding, complex soils that Pinot Gris reaches its full potential as a fine wine. Zind Humbrecht is among the most well regarded Alsatian producers, at least among Europeans, which is why so few people stateside are familiar with them, as so much of their production is grabbed up by top restaurants in France and Germany. Once you give their Pinot Gris a try however, you’ll likely understand why this 96pt white from the tiny ‘Heimbourg’ vineyard is so hard to find.
The Wine Advocate described Zind-Humbrecht’s 2013s as “future classics...very complex and…. stunningly precise.” For the 2013 Heimbourg Pinot Gris, Suckling awarded it 96pts calling it a “phenomenal wine” with its elegant typicity buttressed by a good long time on the lees. Winemaker Olivier Humbrecht is one of the few winemakers in the world to gain Master of Wine status, and according to the Wine Advocate he runs his 40ha estate like a “good vigneron” of a 5ha domaine, which is all the more impressive given how many grand and 1er cru level vineyards he tends (all biodynamically).
If you seek out the great dry Rieslings of Alsace, then this Pinot Gris from Alsatian benchmark Zind Humbrecht is a no-brainer. Enjoy over the next decade!
