2014 Bodegas Alto Moncayo ‘Aquilon’
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $99.94 (reg. $139.94)
From maverick winemaker Chris Ringland, comes this luxurious Spanish Garnacha! A superb small production discovery for fans of Priorat or the southern Rhone, the intense, concentrated Alto Moncayo ‘Aquilon’ is cut from the same cloth with a dose of Ringland’s Aussie influences as well. Nowhere but Spain gives you Grenache like this - overflowing with smokey fruits, spice, and dark floral pastille; think of it as Chateauneuf on steroids!
The best part is that you won't find this vintage under $100 for anywhere else (in fact, we've got the best price by nearly $20 per bottle)!
Campo de Borja is rapidly becoming known among somms and professionals as an underappreciated appellation with major potential thanks to super old vines and a dry climate leading to levels of depth and concentration that you normally get from Napa or Barossa.
If you find yourself drawn towards the larger-framed efforts coming out of Chateauneuf du Pape or the Languedoc-Roussillon, Alto Moncayo’s ‘Aquilon’ is going to be a major hit, and no doubt be a top discovery of 2018. Oenologist and owner-partner Chris Ringland earned his stripes in Australia, crafting 100-point Aussie blockbusters and has been working with Alto Moncayo since its creation in 2002. His approach works well in Campo de Borja, midway between the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, and consistent high scores from the critics back this up.
Today’s price is by far the lowest price in the country, which makes it a terrific opportunity to get in on this under the radar hit, but with less than 150 cases produced there's very little of this to go around so you'll want to act fast. Cheers!
