2014 Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir (Santa Rita Hills)
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $29.94 (reg. $34.94)
Brewer-Clifton have been setting the standard in the Sta Rita Hills for cool climate Pinot and Chardonnay for over 20 years, astonishing Robert Parker as early as 2001 with the “breadth and complexity of their wines.” This calling card Pinot Noir is a superb effort in 2014, showing once again that in warm vintages it’s the cool microclimates of fog drenched Santa Barbara that turn out the freshest, most supple Pinot. The Santa Rita Hills is one of the most exciting AVAs for Burgundian varietals, and Brewer-Clifton have helped to define what the AVA is all about.
Since 2012 this “benchmark estate” (Wine Advocate) has made 100% estate wines, and no coincidence the 2012 vintage of the SRH Pinot nabbed the #8 spot on Wine Spectators best of list. Galloni wrote “no one has done more to carry the banner for the Santa Rita Hills” and their work has been instrumental to the development of the AVA.
The 2014 is a gorgeously fresh and balanced Pinot, “elegantly styled” according to the Wine Advocate. Despite the growing popularity of the small region, tasty Pinot like this can still come in at under thirty bucks! This a Pinot Noir to grab by the case-full and enjoy any night of the week. Cheers!
