"This has been one of the outstanding buys in all of Bordeaux for well over a decade." - Robert Parker on Fleur Cardinale
Fleur Cardinale is a Grand Cru Classé estate that has been on a serious upswing since its acquisition in 2001 by Florence and Dominique Decoster. Among their biggest fans is Robert Parker: “one can’t say enough about the efforts being made…at this property, which is now one of the bright, shining superstars of St.-Emilion”. Remarkably, its price remains accessible. Per Parker, the Decosters are “among the most realistic proprietors in Bordeaux when it comes to pricing their wines," and their 2014 is another stupendous value that packs a serious punch!
Parker calls Fleur Cardinale “consistently one of the best St.-Emilions and over-achieving for its classification”, and this has as much to do with the people as the terroir. In addition to the passionate in-house team, consulting oenologist is Jean-Philippe Fort. Though perhaps not exactly a household name, he’s the real deal: he’s a long-serving member of Michel Rolland’s team and is also the consultant at Angélus, among other top estates.
Performing above its price point as ever, this is a double 94-pointer, with Antonio Galloni and James Suckling concurring. Galloni calls it “a dark, sumptuous wine” that “shows the more overt, opulent side of Saint-Émilion”. Per Suckling, it’s “full-bodied, dense and layered yet always polished and beautiful.”
A few years on from the vintage date, this is still a baby, but cellar a case for a little bit and you’re in for a serious treat for many years to come. Cheers!
