"...this classy villages is well worth your interest..." - Burghound
Puligny-Montrachet is home to some of the greatest white wines in the world, and the 2014 vintage provided outstanding conditions for success. The critics are unanimous with their praise, with the Wine Advocate awarding 97-points overall ("I believe the 2014s show great promise"), 96-points overall from the Wine Spectator ("an excellent vintage") and 95-points from Vinous, where Stephen Tanzer elaborates: "...the 2014 whites display a striking natural balance of fruit, flesh and acidity...For lovers of classic white Burgundies, 2014 is clearly a vintage to buy."
However, with that kind of acclaim prices are sure to rise, so it's great to come across fabulous examples from this heralded vintage that won't break the bank, such as this "excellent" 2014 Puligny-Montrachet from Francois Carillon.
The Carillon family have a long history in Burgundy, with records indicating that the first Carillon tended vines in the village of Puligny-Montrachet all the way back in 1520. Francois started working for his family in 1988, and after two decades of hands-on training plus the inheritance of his own plots, he set off on his own a few years ago. Francois has already started making his mark with the Wine Advocate stating, “I was very impressed with what I tasted, but, and perhaps even more importantly, deeply struck by the attention to detail, especially in the vineyards.”
Chardonnay fans will find this a welcome introduction to the charms of the region and vintage at an accessible price. Cheers!
