2014 Gemstone Proprietary Red Wine
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
"I have always enjoyed the Gemstone wines for their combination of southern Napa Valley freshness, elegance and perfume backed up by serious richness and intensity." - Robert Parker
From one of the most exciting talents in Napa, Thomas Rivers Brown, comes the 2014 Gemstone ! Brown, the 2010 Food & Wine Magazine’s Winemaker of the Year, has numerous 100-point scores to his name from his time at Schrader, Maybach, and Outpost, and now he has helped to bring Gemstone to the top of the heap in the Valley.
Sourced "from a vineyard close to such titans as Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle" (Parker), Gemstone is a seriously old school vineyard known for its Cabernet forward Bordeaux blends and the 2014 Estate Red is another terrific achievement from this venerable producer!
Gemstone once upon a time supplied grape to Pahlmeyer and others before it was purchased by Carole and Michael Marks in 2007, but it wasn’t until the 2014 vintage that things really clicked, thanks to Napa wizard Thomas Rivers Brown, who has a midas touch with Bordeaux varieties. Brown has divided the Yountville estate into 20 tiny blocks, which he evaluated separately in order to compose the most complete Bordeaux blend possible. Featuring 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, with Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc rounding it out, the 2014 spends 20 months in French Oak.
Only 703 cases were made of Gemstone’s 2014 Estate Red, and it is a superb blend of the entire Gemstone Vineyard. Allocations are limited, so get on board and see what Brown is doing at this exceptional site! Cheers!
