New Zealand winemakers are feeling pretty decent about their jobs these days, as the past few releases have been as outstanding as can be, particularly for their world-class Pinots. 2014 followed hot on the heels of the terrific 2013 vintage, with a record breaking bumper harvest that is granting buyers all the way over here a tremendous opportunity to stock up on well-priced, and ridiculously tasty, Pinot Noir! The 2014 Greywacke Pinot certainly qualifies, and this deep, brooding expression is replete with dark spiced fruits, fresh earth, and black tea. Crafted by legendary NZ winemaker Kevin Judd, the 2014 Greywacke Pinot Noir is an easy go-to choose for a tasty, richly textured Pinot that at under $30, won’t break the bank!
Named for the rounded river stones known in NZ as Greywacke, this tiny label is renowned for their Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from the South Island. 2014 was an “an excellent to outstanding vintage” according to the Wine Advocate. Winemaker Kevin Judd is a real pioneer in New Zealand, starting back in the 1980s as Cloudy Bay’s winemaker. His award-winning wines helped put NZ on the map, and the tiny artisanal Greywacke project is his latest, more intimate venture.
You can’t go wrong with a 94pt New Zealand Pinot Noir for just under 30 bucks; enjoy this with nearly everything (and everyone) over the next five years! Cheers!
