"The 2014 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch is a beauty." - Robert Parker
Here’s a terrific representation of a legendary slice of Sonoma terroir at a price that can’t be beat! "The Dutton family is among the most highly respected grape growers in Northern California,” according to Parker and their fruit has long been the basis for excellent wines from a bevy of notable producers (Lewis Cellars, DuMOL, Merry Edwards among others). Kistler’s Dutton Ranch Chardonnay is perhaps the standard bearer for top flight white wine from this acclaimed source, but that bottling will routinely set you back $75-$100 or more (especially in a great vintage like 2014). For a fraction of that, you can get this “big-time winner” at easily the best price around.
The 2014 Jax Chardonnay is made in a style that is both hedonistic and pure and crafted by standout winemaker Kirk Venge. Kirk has been highly sought after by top end boutique wineries for years, and his father Nils was the first American winemaker to earn a 100-point rating from Parker for the 1985 Groth Cabernet Reserve. Exceptional winemaking clearly runs in the family and this gorgeous Chardonnay owes as much to its great terroir as to the talent coaxing out of best attributes from this renown site.
2014 was another outstanding year for California wine and nowhere was it better than in Sonoma where Dutton Ranch is located. The Dutton family are a great example of what happens when the growers of grapes get as much acclaim as any winemaker: they attract all the best vintners to get a share in their crop.
