2014 Leonetti Cabernet Sauvignon
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
It’s hard to believe that at one-time Leonetti was under anyone’s radar, but since the 2010 Leonetti Reserve nabbed 100pts from the Wine Advocate, demand for this Walla Walla legend has exploded. Fortunately, we have a wonderful allocation of what is one of Washington State’s most highly requested Cabernets, and we highly recommend you pick up a few for the cellar as Leonetti’s track-record for aging is impressive. Compared to its peers in Napa Valley, this elegant and balanced Cabernet is a stunning deal that will delight for years.
The 2014 Leonetti is a gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon, balanced by a surprising measure of 11% Petit Verdot and 8% Merlot. The Petit Verdot really shines in adding an elegant menthol and herbal counterpoint to the Cabernet’s rich blackcurrant foundation. “Beautifully concentrated” and showing “blackcurrants, black raspberries, graphite, leafy herbs and even a hint of bay leaf” (Wine Advocate), the Leonetti Cabernet is a superb show-stopping example of Washington State’s best qualities.
Founded by Gary Figgins in 1978, his son Chris Figgins has continued the legacy by shifting focus to the vineyards, converting to biodynamic practices, and re-confirming the family’s status as a “benchmark Washington winery” (Wine Advocate). Given that the domestic demand for Leonetti is as high as it has ever been in the estate’s 40-year history, it’s rare to find their Cabernet for under a hundred bucks, so grab some of this terrific vintage today! Cheers!
