2014 Luciano Sandrone Nebbiolo dAlba Valmaggiore

When you hear the words ‘single-vineyard Nebbiolo’ your mind probably leaps to Barolo or Barbaresco. Among the hills of Roero however, Luciano Sandrone, “one of the leading lights in Piedmont” (Galloni) is making a single vineyard Nebbiolo d’Alba that would pass for a Barolo if it wasn’t so wonderfully unique! ‘Valmaggiore’ is one of Roero’s most well-known vineyards, just 15 miles outside of Barolo, and its steep sandy soils lead to an incredibly aromatic Nebbiolo. One taste and it is clear why Sandrone spent decades developing this extraordinary vineyard. And, for under $30 and the best price of any vintage on the market, it's one that Piedmont fans will want to get their hands on while quantities last!
2014 was an especially exciting year for the ‘Valmaggiore’ as prices were depressed by the poor vintage reports that tend to only focus on Barolo. That’s great for us and our customers because Roero and Barbaresco benefited from the milder climate around the Tanaro River, and quality in those micro-climates was sky high! Far from an entry level Langhe Nebbiolo, this cru expression is a unique and exciting bottling with classic notes of dry red fruits, minty herbs, and sweet floral perfume; a captivating wine for sure!
Sandrone has been impressing critics and collectors for decades with his ultra-collectible Cannubi Boschis Barolo, but applies the same exacting standards (and ultra-low yields) across his entire portfolio. You know you are getting top quality Nebbiolo with Sandrone, and the 2014 ‘Valmaggiore’, while delightful today, will develop nicely over the next 6-12 years. Cheers!
