"Carl von Schubert is one of the great winners of the 2014 vintage...the 2014s are celestial Rieslings with unreal finesse and transparency...don't hesitate to buy as much Abtsberg Rieslings as you can." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Riesling fans have never had it so good as the past few vintages in the Mosel have had something for pretty much everyone. 2014 was a year for classicists and the racy, electric style of Riesling that Trocken lovers adore. It was also a terrific year for Carl von Schubert of Maximin Grunhauser, “one of the great winners of the 2014 vintage” according to the Wine Advocate, whose wines were “celestial”, with “unreal finesse.” Carl von Schubert’s old vine Trocken from Abtsberg is one of the best values of the year, as it packs in all the intense, electric, citric minerality of great Trocken Riesling at under 30 bucks.
Maximin Grunhauser is a “superb estate” (Wine Advocate) that has according to Vinous, been elevated to new heights thanks to Dr Schubert and winemaker Stefan Kraml, and today their Rieslings “among the finest produced on the Mosel.” Robert Parker has long been a fan of this estate as well, for their “potentially long-lived, complex wines.” 2014 was a remarkable year for the challenges it posed to winemakers, and those (like Schubert) who held off their harvest and strictly selected only the healthiest grapes achieved tremendous wines. This led to a “particularly strong showing” (Vinous) for Schubert’s Trocken Rieslings.
This is a high-quality, old-vine dry Riesling that offers a ton of value, and while successive vintages offer more ripeness today, this 2014 Abtsberg Trocken Alte Reben is sure to last for decades in your cellar. Cheers!
