"The Poggio Scalette wines aren't always easy to find, but they are well worth the effort." - Antonio Galloni
Italian wine lovers have a reason to get excited about this excellent old-vine Sangiovese from the Greve region of Tuscany. Antonio Galloni says Il Carbonaione "remains one of the best relative values in fine, ageworthy wine" and this 95-point effort will compare favorably to Flaccianello and Fontalloro for a fraction of the price!
Il Carbonaione is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes from old vines high in the hills above the small Tuscan town of Greve, which churns out, quite simply, some of the most stunning and age-worthy wines from Tuscany. This area is home to the greatest Sangiovese producers in the world: Felsina, Fontodi, Querciabella, and others. The vines for Scalette's flagship 'Il Carbonaione' average 80+ years in age, and the fruit is absolutely splendid.
Poggio Scalette had been untended years until Vittorio Fiore, one of Italy's most famed winemakers, came across the property in the early 1990s. (Fiore has made wine for some of Tuscany's most notable names: Caparzo, Costanti, Viticcio, Terrabianca, Scopeto, and more.)
Remarkably, it was found that the section of the estate from which 'Il Carbonaione' is sourced is the result of a replanting done after World War I (nearly 100 years ago!) and contains the rare, original clone of Sangioves di Lamole.
'Il Carbonaione' offers tremendous quality for the price, and Italian wine fans should not pass up this opportunity to score some at the best price around! Cheers!
