2014 Robert Craig Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Affinity’
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $59.94 (reg. $67.94)
"This winery has been consistently excellent throughout my tastings in Napa going back many, many years. They have also kept a lid on pricing, which remains realistic and consumer-friendly." - Robert Parker
While the days of great Napa Cab for under $100 seems like a dream of long long ago, the folks at Robert Craig continue to pursue terrific classic Cab quality with more traditional pricing, making this 2014 ‘Affinity’ a go-to buy! The Affinity is a “superb...[and] very nicely done” effort (AG), from this Napa Valley stalwart known for its serious, high-quality wine. At under $60 you would be hard pressed to beat ‘Affinity’ thanks to its “classic-leaning sense of structure" (AG) that promises great potential for years to come.
Known for crafting “stylish wines” with “Bordeaux-like elegance” per Parker, he has made no secret of his appreciation, writing that Robert Craig’s Cabernet are an “absolutely stunning value” and “could easily pass for a high-class Margaux.” The ‘Affinity’ succeeds because of that balance between new world fruit and old-world structure, and the 2014 is definitely “old school in style” (Suckling) with dark fruit and black licorice notes laced with spice, backed up with impressive depth and "real harmony" (RP).
2014 was a bit of a surprise vintage as many observers thought that the back to back homeruns of ‘12 and ‘13 couldn’t be matched. After bottling however, it was clear that 2014 was “another superlative year” according to Parker, and James Suckling declared it “sensational” and part of a “new era of classicism” in Napa Valley.
For a classically styled Napa Cab, you really cannot go wrong with the 2014 ‘Affinity.’ Showing supremely well now with some air, this will gain complexity with time and perform admirably for the next 10-15 years. Cheers!
