"a refreshing, vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers the goods" - Antonio Galloni
Vintage after vintage Shafer continues to be serve as a benchmark first growth in Napa Valley, and while the Hillside Select is a worthy flagship, their ‘One Point Five’ Cabernet offers an outstanding level of quality at less than half the price. Even more surprising than that price tag however, is that rather than go with a broad Napa Valley designation, the ‘One Point Five’ is Stag’s Leap fruit, from two vineyards in the district, so you get all the character and depth of this celebrated area for under 90 bucks!
The One Point Five line celebrates the two generations of Shafer family ownership of this landmark winery, and according to Galloni offers “superb quality for what are very modest price tags in the context of present day Napa Valley.” Galloni praised this 2014 Cabernet as a “another strong showing” describing it as “savory, delineated and tightly wound...a picture perfect example of the vintage” while Robert Parker called it a “classic example of the Stags Leap appellation.”
At every level Shafer just keeps on knocking it out of the park. Galloni has called them one of “Napa Valley's best oiled machines” while Parker wrote that Shafer has been at the “top of its game for nearly two decades” and is a “poster boy for remarkable and consistent quality across the board.” With this kind of praise, you know you can rely on Shafer to always come through with a top-notch wine worth every penny. Cheers!
