Sometimes the most challenging vintages yield the most delicious and characterful wines. In the case of Tua Rita’s flagship Redigaffi, they pulled out all the stops to create a wine “that defeats the odds of the difficult vintage” according to the Wine Advocate. Decanter too agreed that this was an “exceptional Merlot", and it proves that the best can knock it out of the park in every year. Tua Rita has been a mainstay Super Tuscan since the early 1980s and prior to ‘92, their vineyard actually supplied Merlot and Cabernet to Sassicaia! Flash forward to 2000, Redigaffi earned the second ever perfect score for a Tuscan wine from the Wine Advocate (after the ‘85 Sassicaia). There’s is no doubt that this estate grown Merlot has some of the most exceptional pedigree in Tuscany and yet compared to its peers (Masseto, Trotanoy, or even Petrus), the price is far closer to earth.
Proprietor Stefano Frascolla and his team made no fewer than seven passes through the vineyard at harvest, eventually dropping a third of the fruit to keep the quality where it ought to be. Much of the success they had is no doubt owed to Luca D'Attoma, the original Tua Rita winemaker who has returned to the estate, and with Frascolla is working to “move towards wines of more finesse” (Galloni). You can taste the results, as this is a beautifully approachable and elegant wine. And with Redigaffi generally trading for well north of $200, you can enjoy the savings here as well! Cheers!
