2014 Upchurch Cabernet Sauvignon
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $55 (reg. $59.94)
Chris Upchurch is a true veteran of the modern-day Washington State wine industry, and he is definitely one of our favorites for Bordeaux blends in the Northwest. Time and again he has proven the potential of these varieties, particularly on Red Mountain. This founding winemaker of DeLille Cellars is today crafting world-class Cabernet Sauvignon under his own name that impresses with depth, intensity, and longevity. Not to mention that this will give the mountain cabs of Napa a serious run for their money!
The 2014 Upchurch is a knockout 95-point Cab from one of the top vineyards and winemakers in the Pacific Northwest. A cellar worthy beauty that will be hard to keep your hands off today, it shows "a fresh, focused style as well as classic Bordeaux notes of black currants, tobacco leaf, graphite, violets and earth" (WA). Since starting this eponymous label, these wines have been tightly allocated, and only about 700 cases are produced!
The Upchurch Vineyard is sustainably farmed on one of Red Mountain’s high elevation plateaus (made famous by Ciel du Cheval). It's no surprise that they delivered a winner in 2014, a vintage that turned out wines that "have what should be treasured by the true wine lovers and drinkers out there—upfront charm, beautiful drinkability and impeccable balance. These consumer-friendly efforts are already drinking great and they’ll age gracefully given their overall balance."
By the time Chris Upchurch had fulfilled his dream and started his own Red Mountain winery in 2007, he was already one of Washington State’s most exciting winemakers thanks to his work with DeLille Cellars, which Robert Parker declared the “Lafite Rothschild of Washington State” and Upchurch was instrumental in establishing Washington’s world-class reputation. This is not his second wine but his flagship estate Cabernet, so grab some today at the lowest price in the country! Cheers!
