2014 Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Spatlese
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $32.94 (reg. $35.94)
From the Maximin Grunhauser estate comes this decadent and complex Spatlese Riesling from the Abtsberg vineyard. Named for the Abbots for whom this wine was once made, Abtsberg produces some of the most long-lived Riesling in the Mosel thanks to the steep hillsides of blue devonian slate that dominate the Ruwer valley. Described by the Wine Advocate as “piquant and intense on the palate, very juicy and concentrated, firm and potent” (95pts), the Abtsberg Spatlese is a grand cru quality Riesling to lay down for decades, but without a grand cru price tag.
For decades the Maximin Grunhauser estate has been making “long-lived, complex wines that are usually among the most classic expressions of German Riesling” (Parker). 2014 was a difficult vintage that rewarded experienced (and patient) classicists like Carl Von Schubert and his cellarmaster Stefan Kraml. Schubert was “one of the great winners” that year according to the Wine Advocate, and the wines made from the Abtsberg vineyard are the finest Schubert and Kraml have produced, no doubt because much of the usual Auslese material was included in this bottling!
This is a stunning 95-point effort with many years of longevity for under $35; where else but the Mosel can you find such quality at this price? Given the limited availability, we urge you to move quickly on this one. Cheers!
