2014 Woodward Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $39.94 (reg. $49.94)
The quest for reasonably priced Cabernet can seem like a never-ending struggle, except when it takes you to Washington State, where some of the most talented winemakers in the country are making affordable, age-worthy Cabernet that don’t require a second mortgage. Rick Small’s Woodward Canyon started in the early days of Washington’s wine industry and since then the Wine Advocate has declared them a “benchmark” winery for “classic, elegant wines.” The warm 2014 vintage combined with the decades of experience brought by winemaker Kevin Mott resulted in a gloriously ripe, yet balanced Cabernet Sauvignon that is all the more incredible when you see the price!
Getting an early start in an AVA like this means access to the best vineyards, as the best sites depend on the right relationships. For the Artist Series, Woodward Canyon pulled out all the stops sourcing fruit from Champoux, Sagemoor, Summit View, and of course their own estate vineyard. These are some pretty fantastic sites and Kevin Mott put them to good use. This gorgeous Cabernet is “rocking notes of spice, incense, black raspberries and dried flowers” (Wine Advocate) and has the structure to develop over the next decade at least.
From "one of the pioneer producers of Walla Walla," Woodward Canyon "continues to be a benchmark against which all others aspiring to the top must be compared" (WA) and their 2014 Artist Series is a terrific value. We have a few cases on hand, so take advantage of the opportunity and get yours right away! Cheers!
