Piedmont may be most famous for Barolo/Barabaresco, but for a delicious Northern Italian red that doesn’t require a decade of patience or a second a mortgage, Barbera always comes through! “It is no secret that Barbera does well in warm vintages” (Vinous), and 2015 was an ideal vintage for today’s “flat-out delicious” Barbera del Monferrato. Accornero’s Bricco Battista is a serious benchmark from a producer that excels with the variety, but this 94pt 2015 is also an incredible value!
Barbera is usually enjoyed as a casual dinner table red in Piedmont, to enjoy while the Barolo is aging, but while Accornero’s Bricco Battista would make a delicious companion with pizza, it’s clearly a serious red as well. The quality of the Barbera from Monferrato has become so apparent that in 2008, Barbera del Monferatto Superiore earned DOCG status, and Galloni has hailed Accornero’s Barberas as “some of the most unique and compelling wines readers will find in Piedmont.”
For Accornero, Barbera is their specialty, and their lineup “dazzles from top to bottom” (Vinous). This 94pt Bricco Battista Barbera is a terrific example of a top quality Barbera, and at under 30 bucks it's a stellar deal.
94 points, Vinous: "The 2015 Barbera del Monferrato Superiore Bricco Battista is fabulous. Black cherry, espresso, leather, smoke and licorice all meld together in this vivid, super-expressive Barbera from Accornero. Deep, aromatically expressive and flat-out delicious, the Bricco Battista is positively stunning." – Antonio Galloni
