"One of my favorite wineries in Rioja..." - Robert Parker

Bodegas Sierra Cantabria has a midas touch with Tempranillo, and their highest priced cuvees are some of Riojas finest, but according to Robert Parker, “their stars are these value-priced wines” like the ‘Unica’ Reserva. With “flawless balance, and a great, great finish” (Dunnuck), this is proof that Rioja remains one of the best sources for high quality values in Europe.

Despite being one of their entry level reds, the ‘Unica’ is a barrel select Reserva from estate vines over 30 years old and aged for two years in French and American oak. The Eguren Family has been growing grapes in Rioja Alavesa since the 1870s, and their Bodega has been a benchmark since they set up shop in 1957. Four generations later Marcos Eguren and his brother Miguel Angel keep the focus on their family vineyards. Their Tempranillo vines thrive in the warm climate, and 2015 was an “outstanding vintage for Rioja” (Vinous) that is clearly evident in this bottling!

We love well made Rioja not just because of the value, but because it’s so rare these days to find an age worthy red in this price range. The Sierra Cantabria ‘Unica’ Reserva may taste great today but it has another decade in the tank, so we highly encourage you to stock up and follow this unbelievable vintage over several years!

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck: "The single vineyard 2015 Reserva Unica is one of the few from this estate that's not 100% Tempranillo, as it includes 3% Graciano. Aged two years mostly in French oak (30% new), its deep ruby/purple color gives way to a brilliant wine that's loaded with notions of ripe black cherries, blackcurrants, smoked earth, crushed violets, cigar, and lead pencil shavings. It's rich, full-bodied, has a terrific mid-palate, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. This is a beautiful wine."

94 points, James Suckling: "This shows a wonderful center palate of dark berries and hints of licorice and lavender. Full yet lively and energetic with polished tannins that give the wine form and texture. Mostly old tempranillo with a a touch of graciano."
