2015 Caiarossa Toscana IGT
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
"I continue to be impressed with the overall quality level at Caiarossa" - Antonio Galloni
The Tuscan coast, with its gentle hills sloping towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, is the legendary home of the Super Tuscan movement, and the spirit of experimentation continues to thrive here at “dynamic” new estates like Caiarossa. The greater Maremma is the most exciting area in all of Italy for Bordeaux varieties, and while in the past, only the high-priced cult collectibles like Sassicaia or Ornellaia were typically available, there’s now a resurgence of affordable options from previously untapped terroir. Today’s 2015 ‘Caiarossa’ IGT is an exciting and unique single-vineyard blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, and Alicante. Bursting with Tuscan personality, this is almost never available for under fifty bucks, and it’s an absolute must have for lovers of top quality rosso!
Caiarossa was founded back in 1998 and was one of the first to practice biodynamic viticulture in the region. Their efforts have helped unlock the “winemaking potential of this unknown area” (Wine Advocate) near Pisa. The Podere Serra all’Olio vineyard is planted to the seven varieties that make up the Caiarossa flagship and with its loose, calcareous soils it carries an elegance and structure reminiscent of Bordeaux without sacrificing Tuscan personality.
With 96 points from James Suckling, the 2015 Caiarossa is a sensational super Tuscan that will impress fans of Napa and Bordeaux, and all for under fifty bucks! Cheers!
