"the notable property that defined the Chalk Hill AVA" - Robert Parker
Chalk Hill might just be California’s answer to the Haut-Medoc, and no winery deserves more credit for putting this eastern Sonoma AVA on the map than Chalk Hill Estate. Described by Robert Parker as “one of the most singular and unique blends in Northern California”, the Chalk Hill Estate Red is gloriously complex, structured Cabernet blend that can stand up to its higher-priced Napa brethren. 2015 was a superb vintage for Sonoma, and per Galloni, the best are “exotic, viscerally thrilling wines.” With 94+ points from the Wine Advocate, Chalk Hill’s flagship red is a structured, full bodied Cabernet blend with terroir-driven elegance, all for under fifty bucks!
The warmer microclimate and white volcanic soil at the foothills of the Mayacamas makes Chalk Hill more Napa in character than Sonoma. That soil is the key to the region’s quality as it reduces vigor in the vines leading to greater concentration and tannin. With 57% Cabernet, the 2015 Chalk Hill Estate Red has signature blackberry and blackcurrant fruit wrapped up in a generous, full bodied frame. The structure here means this will age more like an old-world wine but with plenty of tastiness to enjoy young too. The high percentage of Malbec (29%) in addition to the more traditional Bordeaux varieties helps tip the scales from classic Left Bank Bordeaux to one of a kind California red. Give this a few years to unwind and enjoy over the next 2+ decades! Cheers!
