2015 Courbis St Joseph Les Royes
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
2015 was a “truly sensational” vintage in the Northern Rhone where Syrah found an extraordinary balance between ripeness and character that will be tough to beat. Vinous has described it as a “vintage to dive into, deeply” with “outstanding wines for the long haul". Courbis’ 96-point ‘Les Royes’ St Joseph is not only one of the tastiest single-vineyard Syrahs we’ve found in the appellation, but per Jeb Dunnuck, they are the “finest wines” he’s ever tasted from the “brilliant” estate!
The Courbis brothers, Laurent and Dominique, have a beautiful array of vineyards surrounding the village of Chateaubourg, and ‘Les Royes’, with its steep terracing and full southern exposure, leads to layered Syrah of intense concentration and richness. Parker writes that Courbis is one of the most “quality-conscious estates in the Northern Rhône,” picking at full ripeness and raising the wine in a mix of new and used smaller barrels.
Showing “tons of cassis, graphite and charcoal aromatics” (JD), the 2015 ‘Les Royes’ St Joseph has plenty of old world character but with a flamboyantly rich style. This will offer loads of early appeal but has the stuffing to last, so don’t be afraid to stash some of these away for a few years. Cheers!
