2015 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate Blanc
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $24.94 (was: $34.94)
Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are pretty much perfect for each other, and it’s a shame New World regions that do well with red Bordeaux grapes don’t put more attention on this terrific pair. Fortunately, one of Washington State’s top talents, Chris Upchurch of DeLille Cellars, makes a delightful Bordeaux blanc blend. With over 25% off and the best price around, it's a perfect value to stock up on!
Chris Upchurch of DeLille is one of Washington’s hottest winemaking talents, and his Chaleur Estate Blanc has been described as “Graves-like” (Parker) and similar to “top Pessac-Leognan” like Smith-Haut-Lafitte (Wine Advocate). Sauvignon Blanc (73%) brings the bright citrus fruits and wild herbs while Semillon contributes gorgeous texture along with honey and almond notes.
Considered "one of the few serious white Bordeaux blends being made in the U.S." (Jeb Dunnuck), DeLille’s Chaleur Estate Blanc is literally a fraction of the price of top white Bordeaux, and over the course of 22 vintages, it's clear that Chris Upchurch’s Washington interpretation is no less delicious. With a profile that is “sexy, complex and smooth on the palate, with expressive flavors” (Vinous, 93+ points), the 2015 Chaleur Estate Blanc sees 60% new oak, and the Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from Sagemoor, which have the oldest SB plantings in the state!
This supremely versatile and complex white Bordeaux blend is a steal at this price, and from intimate dinners to parties it is sure to please. As Jancis Robinson suggests, "I’d love to see this alongside a good Pessac-Léognan," and at a fraction of the price to the heavy-hitters from Bordeaux, it's easy to do so. Cheers!
