2015 Domaine Bitouzet Prieur Volnay
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
2015 is proving to be an absolute boon to Burgundy lovers with high quality village level red Burgundy at phenomenally reasonable prices. Vinous described the vintage as “consistently successful throughout the Côte d’Or” and it's a terrific chance to stock up on your favorite communes. The 2015 Volnay from Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur is a textbook Volnay that is sure to please with classic characteristics of rich deep fruit, lush texture, and lively acidity.
The Bitouzet family has been in Volnay for over two centuries now, and the latest generation is helping bring their reputation as winemakers to a whole new level. François Bitouzet has been with the family domaine since 2005, introducing organic viticulture, and according to Clive Coates crafting some “very good wines” with equal success in both Meursault and Volnay. Bitouzet-Prieur’s 2015 Volnay shows “rich and velvet-textured flavors...all wrapped in a sappy a lightly mineral-inflected finish” (Burghound). Despite the very warm, ripe vintage, this Volnay’s profile tends strongly towards red fruit with plenty of earthy nuances rounding it out.
While the hype surrounding 2015’s top crus is putting their pricing into overdrive, it’s a “prime vintage for buying village wines” according to Stephen Tanzer, and Domaine Bitouzet Prieur should be the first stop for anyone who loves Volnay. You can enjoy this superb bottle from Bitouzet-Prieur today or cellar it for a decade as it will definitely continue to develop. Cheers!
