Fans of Grenache dominated reds from Priorat to Chateauneuf are going to want to stock up on Domaine LaFage’s 2015s, as they represent some of the greatest values in France today. An easy peer to your favorite Rhones, Domaine LaFage is the name to beat for gorgeously decadent, fruit-forward reds from the Roussillon. Drawing on an epic quantity of old vine plantings their releases represent “mind-boggling value” according to the Wine Advocate, and their 2015 ‘Arqueta’ is another super overachieving bottle from their newly renovated winery.
As savvy wine buyers continue to explore the large number of terrific opportunities in the Roussillon, the Collioure keeps popping up as one of the top sub-regions. A small coastal town just north of the Spanish border, the combination of previously underappreciated heritage vineyards and immediate proximity to the Mediterranean make for some beautifully balanced Grenache blends that will wow fans of Priorat and the Southern Rhone alike. The ‘Arqueta’ comes from this tiny area and features a blend of 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 25% Carignan, and a splash Grenache Gris. The coastal influence moderated the heat of the vintage while contributing refreshing minerality to the dark berry profile.
Much like the Rhone, Roussillon also experienced a fantastic vintage in 2015, creating wines that "will offer immense appeal" according to the Wine Advocate. The 2015 'Arqueta' certainly embodies that notion as we were absolutely delighted when we popped a bottle recently, and we were even more excited about the sub-$25 price for the quality in the bottle.
